Texas School District Charging Students Who Get Cell Phones Confiscated in Class
A Texas School district is tired of the growing problem of students using cell phones in their classrooms.
Like most schools, they confiscate the students phone if using it in class. The controversy is, what they have to do to get the phone back. Hays Consolidated Independent School District in central Texas will now charge students $10 to get their phone back. Previously, parents had to retrieve their child’s phone if it was taken away but school officials said that punishment wasn’t harsh enough. The District is trying to combat the “addiction” of cell phone use. Is money a good deterrent for the students or would something like fulfilling community service be a better punishment? Should teachers budget 5-10 mins of cell phone use into their class time so kids can check their messages and then focus on their class?
