"Bird Box" has been a huge success for Netflix, and the ending was positive, but if the ending had of gone the same way as the book it would have been more disturbing and dark.  *SPOILERS*

At the end of the movie, Malorie reaches safety at the sanctuary and everyone is safe, but in the book, everyone blinded themselves to be safe.

According to Susanne Bier, the director of the film, the reason for the different ending is that most of her films end in a positive light.

"I'm not particularly interested for the audience to leave, from the cinema or their own screen, with a kind of completely bleak point of view. That's not what I believe in," Bier said.
