How upset would you be if you took a five-minute cab ride and it ended up costing you nearly $900?

Well, that’s exactly what happened to a couple in New Zealand.

John and Susan Barrett needed a cab to their hotel that was five minutes away and it cost them $887 in what appears to be an elaborate travel scam.

Barrett said that when he got to his hotel the meter said $10 but the driver’s hand blocked the total charge, and he wasn’t given a receipt. He didn’t see the charge until his card was declined at a grocery store, and that’s when he saw the charge.

The couple is working to dispute the charges and police are working to find the rogue taxi driver.

Have you ever been scammed while traveling to another country? Do you always get a receipt? Do you think the taxi driver will ever be found?
