Oprah Reflects on Fighting for Equal Pay: ‘I Knew My Value’
On Tuesday, Oprah accepted the Hollywood Reporter’s Empowerment in Entertainment Award.
During her acceptance speech, she told the story of when she had her show, The Oprah Winfrey Show. In telling the story, she notes that this was before she owned the show. She had just been given a raise when she asked that her producers, who were all women, also be given a raise. Her request was rejected and the male executive responded, “they’re only girls.” She said she took a deep breath and said, “either they’re going to get a raise or I am going to sit down.” They received their raise.
Do you recall a time someone stood up for you at work?
Fairness in pay is one of the most important thing we measure when it comes to compensation. Employees really pay attention to how fairly they are paid compared to others. https://t.co/qwfmt4fBP0
