Good god. What is that smell?  That was the question on everyone’s mind (Myself included)  who visited  Sanibel Island this past weekend.

I can tell you from firsthand experience that it was bad. That scent could gag a maggot. That stink could knock a buzzard off a gut wagon. So what was it? Red drift algae? Maybe. Some think the smell is coming from the water itself. Officials say the water is safe.  So why all the red drift Algae? The large amount of algae on beaches is caused when storms like Hurricane Dorian with strong winds kicks up the red algae that sits at the bottom of the Gulf where it then comes ashore to ruin your weekend.
