Lizzo is under fire for her hit single “Truth Hurts.” Everyone knows the line in the song, “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch,” and now people are saying that the idea for it wasn’t originally hers.
According to Hollywood Unlocked, British musician Mina Lioness claims she came up with the line. This comes after Lizzo was trying to trademark it. There is even a tweet from February of 2017 where Mina Lioness tweeted it out.
“Truth Hurts” came out seven months later.
In 2018, Mina confronted Lizzo on Twitter about the line, saying, “Now everyone believes those were your words, when in fact they were mine. My creativity, my wit, and my comedy,” but Lizzo still denies stealing it. She responded, saying, “‘Truth Hurts’ was written In June fyi – someone made a meme on IG that said, ‘I’m 100% that bitch’ and we were inspired, I give that meme credit when I talk about making the song. I never seen ur viral tweet but I’m glad it exists.”
There is also a producer and songwriter coming forward saying the song is similar to his song “Healthy.” Justin Raisen claims he worked with Lizzo and never received credit for it.
He put a mashup of the two songs on Instagram with a lengthy post about working with Lizzo and how the song came to be. He explains, “On April 11th, 2017, we wrote a song called ‘Healthy’ w/Lizzo. ‘I just took a DNA test turns out I’m 100% that bitch’ was taken from ‘Healthy’ and used in ‘Truth Hurts.’ We were never contacted about being credited.”
Justin also explains that he tried to quietly sort this out for the last two years, but they were shut down every time. Listen to the mashup of “Healthy” and “Truth Hurts” below.
