The National Hurricane Center’s 2 p.m. advisory currently shows Southwest Florida in the projected forecast cone of Tropical Depression 13.
The storm formed overnight in the mid-Atlantic and is expected to develop into Tropical Storm Laura by tonight, according to the NHC.
According to NBC2, The storm is expected to intensify, and the latest updated forecast cone has it approaching Category 1 hurricane strength as it nears Florida by early next week.
Tropical Depression 13 is currently about 700 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands with maximum sustained winds at 35 miles per hour, and moving west-northwest at 21 miles per hour.
A tropical storm watch is in effect for Saba and St. Eustatius, St. Maaten, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, and Anguilla.
