Here's where my excitement started to build..I was getting close!

The other day NBC2 did a story about the elusive ghost orchid, so I decided it would make for a perfect adventure to go on a hunt to see if I could find it myself.

If you don’t know, the ghost orchid only blooms between June-August, only in Southwest Florida and Cuba and needs the perfect blend of humidity, a pollinator and rainfall to exist. People come from all over the world just to lay eyes on this flower.

It’s currently in bloom at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, but off the boardwalk and can only be seen with binoculars, but I saw on the Instagram page for the Naples Botanical Garden that it was there too, so I hit the road excited as can be. Now, don’t get me wrong, I do love flowers, but would I fly across the world to see one? No. But will I drive 45 mins to a place I’ve never been to see something cool and to experience something new? Yes!

Well, I found out just how elusive this ghost orchid really is. I got there and exclaimed to the lady at the ticket counter “I’m here to see the ghost orchid!” and she dropped her head, and said “Oh honey, you won’t be seeing that today. It’s done.” How could that be?! Well, when it blooms, it’s only for a week and I missed it. Of course, just my luck. Maybe I shouldn’t buy a Mega Millions ticket after all.

Still, I went in to walk around and I’m so glad I did. The property was gorgeous and the gardens were impeccable. I definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something different to do to get outside and Lee, Collier and Charlotte County residents can enjoy half off tickets through September 30.
