Update On Re-Opening Lee County School District Schools
Update On Re-Opening Lee County School District Schools
The Lee County School District plans to make an announcement this Friday about the status of the schools and district offices for next week.
Superintendent Dr. Christopher Bernier posted a video regarding the latest on school re-openings and the ongoing efforts to help our community recover from Hurricane Ian. Please take a minute to watch his message on the School District of Lee County Facebook page.
If you are not able to view the video, please read the letter from Dr. Christopher Bernier below.
Good Evening,
I hope that you and your family find yourselves in a better place as each day passes. The School District of Lee County continues to work incredibly hard to support our community and prepare our schools to reopen.
Today, we helped more than 1,000 families during a food and water distribution event at our Central Office. Thank you to our partners at Miami Dade County Public Schools for delivering 1,400 packages of food and water for our students, families, staff, and community.
Tomorrow, we are hosting another Grab and Go food distribution event from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., this time at James Stephens Elementary School in Fort Myers. Pinellas County Schools is graciously providing food and water; and, we thank them for their support.
We continue our assessment of our schools with professional inspectors documenting the damage so we may continue making repairs. We expect to have our first official report on schools that are ready to go by the end of the day tomorrow. We will use that information to make an informed decision about school and district operations for next week. We will announce next week’s plan on Friday.
We understand that you want to know when we will reopen schools. Know that we want to open up as soon as possible. However, we must have all of the information necessary to make decisions safely and effectively. You are a partner in helping us gather that important information. Today, we sent out a survey to all of our families. If you have connectivity, we ask that you please respond to our Family Check-In Survey so that we may get a sense of how you are doing.
We know the impact that the storm has had on our community. I visited one of our hardest hit schools today, Hector Cafferata Elementary School. The damage is just as fresh today as it was last week. While Principal Kurtz and I walked through the site, we discovered a treasure: the school’s Medal of Honor. It was an indescribable moment that underneath the rubble, we found such joy.
These small steps are important, because each one is a step forward toward recovery. We will be sensitive to your needs, and we will open when we can do so safely. Thank you.
