Selena Gomez Calls Her Split From Justin Bieber The ‘Best Thing’

Selena Gomez is calling her past relationship with Justin Bieber “the best thing” that has ever happened to her. In her new documentary, My Mind & Me, which was released on Apple TV+ today (November 4), the 30-year-old singer and actress opened up about the end of her eight-year relationship with Bieber in 2018.
While discussing her hit 2020 song, “Lose You to Love Me,” Gomez revealed that she reached out to songwriters Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter with the hope of writing a song that would explain all her emotions. “‘I think I’m ready to just say I’m sad,'” she texted the two. “We wrote the song in 45 minutes. The fastest song I’ve ever written.” She continued, “It’s about more than a lost love. It’s me learning to choose myself, to choose life, but also hoping that people can find grace and peace in that too. The song is about knowing that you completely lost every part of who you are just to rediscover yourself again.”
Gomez’s on-again, off-again relationship with the “Sorry” singer spanned from 2012 to 2018. Shortly after their split, Bieber married Hailey Baldwin. For the Only Murders In The Building star, being in the public eye made the split harder to deal with. “I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of,” Selena said. “Then I just moved past it, and I wasn’t afraid anymore.”
“I feel like I had to go through the worst possible heartbreak ever and then just forgetting everything at the drop of the hand, it was really confusing,” she reflected in the doc. “But I just think that needed to happen and ultimately it was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
Although Gomez doesn’t go into major detail about her relationship with the pop star in the documentary, she does express how she felt tired of the constant connection to Bieber. Elsewhere in the documentary, Gomez broke down in tears during rehearsals for her 2016 Revival tour after the head of her record label, John Janick, asked her to do a song with Bieber.
“I don’t know what John thinks, I want to talk to John. I don’t want to disappoint John. I don’t want him to think that he signed some f—ing Disney kid,” she said through tears. “It just sucks too, because the whole song thing. He called me this morning about the song with Justin, like, when am I just going to be good enough by myself? When am I gonna be good just by myself, not needed anybody to be associated with?”
As we previously reported, Gomez posed with Hailey for a sweet picture together at the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles last month, putting the longstanding feud rumors between the two to rest.
Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber Squash Beef, Pose Together For Photos
Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber have proved to fans that there is no bad blood between the two — posting photos cozying up together. A few weeks following Hailey’s interview opening up about the backlash she faced when she began dating Justin Bieber, Gomez’s ex. The two women attended the 2022 Academy Museum Gala and photographer Tyrell Hampton shared one of the snaps on Instagram alongside the caption, “plot twist.”

As both Selena and Hailey have noted, their fanbases have attempted to pit the two against each other. Last month, the Only Murders in the Building star spoke out against the “vile and disgusting” hate Hailey received due to the timing of her relationship with Justin. Gomez posted a TikTok video calling out her fans who were actively attacking Hailey online.
“I think some of the things that I don’t even need to be aware of are just vile and disgusting, and it’s not fair, and no one, ever, should be spoken to in the manner that I’ve seen,” Selena said in the video. “All I have to say is, it’s incredibly ironic that I would release something that is all about kind words, ’cause that’s exactly what I want. That’s it.”
For her part, Hailey shared that even though it may have appeared from the outside that there was some overlap between her relationship with Justin and Gomez’s, the pop star was single when their romance began. “A lot of the hate and the perpetuation comes from like, ‘Oh, you stole [Justin].’ And I guess maybe that just comes from the fact that they wished he had ended up with somebody else. And that’s fine. You can wish that all you want but that’s just not the case.”
She added, “But I will say too, the only people that really know the truth of the situation and what the timeline really was and how it happened and how it went down are like me and him. Perception is a really tricky thing because when you’re watching something from the outside, you can see it one way when it may not really be the reality of what happened behind closed doors.”
