Ellie Goulding’s Next Album Might Be About Climate Change
Even though Ellie Goulding’s newest album, Higher Than Heaven, is her “least personal album” yet, that doesn’t mean it isn’t serious.
Now that her son Arthur is nearing two years old, Goulding is more introspective. She wants to apply that to her music. “I just built a studio by my house, which means I’m going to be in there, playing guitar and getting really deep,” Goulding told People.
A longtime climate change activist, Goulding, 36, says she has been getting increasingly upset about the state of the world. While she’s never written about topics like this before, it could happen for a future project. People used to ask her, “Will you ever write about the environment?” It made the musician “cringe” before, but now, she’s not so sure. “It’s starting to make me so angry to the point where I think it’s going to end up in a few songs at some point on an album.”

In the meantime, she’s taking her climate passion on the road for her upcoming world tour. The “Love Me Like You Do” singer successfully conducted a carbon-neutral tour in 2021, and she’s looking to do it again. Goulding expressed her frustrations with venues not being more accessible with reducing their carbon footprint. However, she remains hopeful. “If I can inspire every single tour of every musician to go in that direction, I feel like I would’ve achieved something.”
Despite her concerns, Goulding is excited to tour for her new dance album because she knows the fans are going to enjoy it. “Sometimes it’s tough performing the emotional songs over and over and over again,” the British singer-songwriter said.
Higher Than Heaven is Goulding’s fifth studio album. The new album features 16 songs and is her “least personal album” with a synth-pop/dance feel to it.
