The New Hurricane Forecast Shows A 49% Chance A Major Hurricane Will Threaten Southwest Florida This Season
First of all, calm down. Nothing has happened yet. And by threaten, that means close enough for concern. The new, and widely used, Colorado State University Hurricane Forecast is out. The forecast calls for 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes, and 2 major hurricanes. Having 2 major hurricanes (Category 3 and above) would be down from the average of 3.2 per year. But as we in Southwest Florida, especially Fort Myers Beach, Port Charlotte, and all of us know, it only takes one. And that’s where they break the stats down further.
PROBABILITY FOR AT LEAST ONE MAJOR (CATEGORY 3-4-5) HURRICANE TRACKING THROUGH THE CARIBBEAN (10-20°N, 88-60°W)
49%
Those coordinates are basically the Yucatan Peninsula down to Panama, over to the area just past Puerto Rico down to South America. Type in the coordinates into Google Maps if you want to see for yourself. That’s the area defined as the Caribbean. Hurricanes Charley, Irma, and Ian all developed through this area before hitting Southwest Florida. The prediction also shows a 21% chance of a major storm hitting the East Coast and a 27% chance one of those majors hits the gulf coast panhandle to Texas area.
The Colorado State forecast adds “We issue these forecasts to satisfy the curiosity of the general public and to bring attention to the hurricane problem. There is a general interest in knowing what the odds are for an active or inactive season. One must remember that our forecasts are based on the premise that those global oceanic and atmospheric conditions which preceded comparatively active or inactive hurricane seasons in the past provide meaningful information about similar trends in future seasons.” They also add that “Larger-than-normal uncertainty
exists with this outlook.” That statement is based around El Niño uncertainty. We’ll get a better idea once we get into summer.
Keep in mind that’s NOT a 49% chance of a major hurricane hitting us in Southwest Florida.
The Hurricane Forecast shows a 49% chance of a major hurricane in the Caribbean – close enough to us for concern.
A lot of residents have friends and family throughout the Caribbean. Be prepared. And be safe.
