Cape Coral Is One Of The Most Dangerous Cities In The Country For Cyclists
If you’re a cyclist living in Southwest Florida, you know all to well about sharing the roads. The traffic here is bad enough in a car, imagine how intimidating that can be for a cyclist. The law is to share the road, but that certainly isn’t the case.
My father-in-law was a victim of a bad fall on his bicycle in recent years. He suffered broken bones, severe rash burn and a new sense of worry when out enjoying his rides. How hard is it to just share the road?
In a recent study conducted by Velotric, it was discovered that Florida is home to 5 of the most dangerous cities for cyclists. Here’s what they had to say.
Florida (7.4), Louisiana (7.2), and Arizona (4.3) are the states with the most fatal bike accidents per million residents. Houston (20), Los Angeles (14), and Tampa (12) are the most dangerous cities for cyclists by number of fatal bike accidents in a year. Additional Florida cities in the top 10 include Jacksonville (9), Miami (9), West Palm Beach (9) and Cape Coral (8).
Some other key stats coming out of the study tell us that 82% of cyclists are scared to bike in their city. That is a HUGE number. 1 in 4 cyclists don’t wear a helmet during the rush hour drive from 5pm – 7pm. You can read the full study here.
