What a difference just 2 weeks makes! The last drone video from Brian Kennedy was a couple weeks ago. The Fort Myers Beach Margaritaville Hotel construction has progressed greatly.

There's been a lot of progress on the Sunset Terrace, especialy. The License To Chill Bar and Grill is taking shape. According to Margaritavlle "The Chill Bar as we refer to it, is elevated and perched out on the seaward side overlooking Times Square, Crescent Beach Park and of course the Gulf of Mexico. The Chill Bar will be encircled in fire pits and cozy seating areas and of course all kinds of seating inside or under the roof of the bar."

The buildings are beginning to get that finished look on the outside, though much interior work remains. The plan is currently to open the resort in November, in time for our busy season. The Beach Club should be finished a month or two later. Obviously this time of year the weather can play havoc. I'm sure these violent rains we've been getting have not helped. But the hotel is really progressing nicely.

The Fort Myers Beach Margaritaville Hotel is going to be a huge boost for the beach. Their visitors will roam the area into other shops and restaurants. We'll see how things go, but maybe by next July 4th, we'll be back to watching fireworks from Times Square.

Fort Myers Beach is absolutely destroyed. Our entire Southwest Florida area is reeling from Hurricane Ian. Most of us are without power and internet. We have limited cell and text messaging available. Many of you reading this are from outside of our area, so if can help:

Hurricane Ian made landfall near Cayo Costa, an island off the coast of Fort Myers, just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday. With Ian, came 150 mph winds, the fifth-strongest hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. According to ABC News, "Ian then made a second landfall 90 minutes later, still as a Category 4 storm with 145 mph winds, just south of Punta Gorda, near Pirate Harbor."

While the efforts to restore Fort Myers Beach will be a years long recovery, our whole area is suffering greatly. The causeway to Sanibel collapsed and the docks sustained heavy damage, making the island only accessible by helicopter. There's some areas where we don't even know yet the extent of the damage.

We will rebuild. But this is going to take a long time.
