Teen Arrested In Naples Coastland Center Mall With Loaded AR Style Rifle
A 14 year old was arrested at The Coastland Center Mall in Naples yesterday after a witness spotted a rifle imprint in his backpack. According to information provided by Naples, Florida police:
“On April 21, 2024, at approximately 3:09pm, a Naples Police Sergeant was working a contract duty detail assigned to the Coastland Center Mall when he was contacted by mall security to respond to the area of the mall in front of Old Navy. Upon arrival, the sergeant met with security and a witness who stated he observed a white male with blonde hair, black shirt and wearing blue/black backpack with what appeared to have an impression of a rifle inside the backpack.
The witness advised he then heard one of the males point to the ‘No Guns Allowed’ sign on the entrance door and say, “no rifles allowed bro.” Believing the male had a firearm, the Naples Police Department was contacted.
Naples Police Arrive at Coastland Center Mall
The suspect was located shortly thereafter exiting a mall store and upon initial contact the Sergeant could readily see a long object inside Sweeney’s backpack making an imprint consistent with the witness account. During the initial contact, the Sergeant advised the suspect of the witness statements and requested consent to search his backpack. The request was denied and stated he did not want his backpack searched because he had “weed” in it.
From there, the Sergeant escorted the suspect to the food court entrance for further investigation. Upon the arrival of back up officers, the Sergeant attempted to detain the 14 year old in order to conduct a probable cause search of his backpack. At that time, he pulled away and attempted to flee from officers. A takedown was utilized to control the teen and he was placed in custody without further incident. A search of the backpack revealed a Palmetto State Armory AR style rifle with a fully loaded magazine and less than 20 grams of marijuana.
Teen Claims That He Wasn’t Planning A Mass Shooting
During further investigation, Naples Police Detectives learned that the teen did not have any intention to utilize the rifle while at the Coastland Center Mall and only had it with him to walk around. He stated he was not at the mall to conduct a shooting nor was he there due to any conflict with anyone. The suspect would not provide any information to detectives as to when and where he became in possession of the rifle.”
The Coastland Center Mall did not provide a statement in the press release from the Police. The Naples Police Department has released a mugshot and name of the suspect, but we chose not to put that in the story due to his age (14).
Update:
The arrest report is now public and shows that the teen’s residence is in the San Carlos Park area of Fort Myers.
