For over two years, the Sanibel Fishing Pier has remained closed as a result of Hurricane Ian. Once a gathering place for anglers, residents, and tourists alike, the pier now stands fenced off.

The prolonged closure has sparked a growing movement among community members and local businesses, all advocating for the pier's revival. Repairing the pier would cost an estimated $400,000 while replacing it entirely would cost nearly $1.3 million.

Without funds from FEMA, though, the city was unable to afford the repairs. As a response, Sanibel residents launched their own fundraiser.

"I think it's wonderful that the public has come forward to say we want to raise these funds because, as a city, we need that," said Councilwoman Holly Smith. "We can't be everything to everyone as much as we are trying to be the best that we can."

Bob Stern, a key figure in the push for restoration, emphasized that plans were in the beginning stages, still. He estimates that once plans are finalized, construction could take six to nine months to complete.
