A massive plan to relocate Naples Airport to East Collier County, costing $2 billion, is now under consideration by the Naples Airport Authority Board of Commissioners.

During their latest meeting on Feb. 20, the board asked consultants to investigate four locations in East Collier County and work out funding options. However, county officials seem reluctant to support the major move.

The city leases the property to the NAA for just $1 per year through 2068. This agreement, made back in 1969, makes it complicated to consider relocating elsewhere.

Residents have complained about noise levels periodically since the 1990s. However, the Federal Aviation Administration maintains that noise levels remain within acceptable limits.

Operating on a $67.35 million annual budget without using taxpayer money, the airport generates $780 million for local businesses and tourism.

NAA chief Chris Rozansky is working with Environmental Science Associates on the next phase of study — a $495,000 project. They're exploring options to either sell the current site or use municipal bonds for the new location.

Rather than relocating, City Council prefers to address the noise issues directly.
