Skyscrapers, stadiums, bridges and other landmarks in cities all over the U.S. on Thursday were illuminated with blue lights to pay tribute to medical workers and first responders who are putting their lives on the line to help fight the coronavirus.

The coordinated nationwide effort, which was part of the "Light it Blue" campaign, involved more than 400 businesses and venues from coast to coast.

Among the dozens of states that participated was New York, where the World Trade Center and Niagra Falls glowed blue. In Louisiana, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and Smoothie King Center in New Orleans took part, as did three landmarks in Baton Rouge: the governor's mansion, LSU's Tiger Stadium and the state capitol. In Los Angeles -- where the Staples Center, LAX airport and Universal Studios' Harry Potter castle were among the dozens of buildings that participated -- thousands of residents let out a deafening cheer when the lights were switched on at 8 p.m. One onlooker said, "In these tough times, it's an emotional moment to see and hear L.A. come together."
