Tripadvisor®, the world’s largest travel guidance platform, today released the next in its Seasonal Travel Index series, revealing data and trends about what to expect for travel this fall. City breaks are most popular with travelers looking for fall travel.  In fact, most travelers (75%) plan to return to a destination they’ve visited before, as repeat destinations can give travelers a greater sense of security.

For those looking to travel abroad, here’s the Most Popular International Destinations for Americans This Fall

  1. Paris, France
  2. Cancun, Mexico
  3. Rome, Italy
  4. London, United Kingdom
  5. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

My parents did one of those excursions at Punta Cana and absolutely loved it. The downside of booking a trip to the DR in fall is, of course, the threat of hurricanes.

So what are people looking for in fall travel?

  • Most travelers will prioritize food while on their trip (67%), which aligns with food generating the most excitement. Younger groups are more likely to prioritize food, nightlife, and shopping. Local options are the most popular.

65% of U.S. travelers will stay domestic this fall, and for those staying stateside, the ever-popular Las VegasNew York City, and Orlando round out the top three most popular destinations Americans will visit, respectively. But those are established trips and everyone is aware of those locations. Let’s look into what’s hot.

Below are the top trending domestic destinations for Americans this fall on Tripadvisor, based on places with the greatest year-over-year growth.

 

  • 1. Little Torch Key, Florida

    Little Torch Key is an island in the lower Florida Keys. U.S. Route 1, crosses the key at about mile markers 28–29. It is immediately preceded to the northeast by Big Pine Key, and is followed by Middle Torch Key to the southwest. Wikipedia

  • 2. Indian Rocks Beach, Florida

    Indian Rocks Beach is part of the Tampa-St. Pete area. IRB has 27 beach access points along Gulf Boulevard, perfect for catching that Florida West Coast sunset. 

  • 3. Miami Springs, Florida

    Suburb of Miami, making the city reachable, but still keeping it’s distance. Not really near the beach, but lots of restaurants and parks.

  • 4. Hawley, Pennsylvania

    Hawley is a borough on the Lackawaxen River in Wayne County, Pennsylvania. Hawley is near Lake Wallenpaupack, Pennsylvania’s third-largest artificial lake, making it an ideal destination for boaters, anglers, swimmers, and water-skiers.

  • 5. Carefree, Arizona

    Carefree is a suburb of both Phoenix and Scottsdale, located in the far northeast area of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. The Sundial and MacDonald’s Ranch are popular spots.

  • 6. Reno, Nevada

    22 miles north of lake Tahoe, it’s the Biggest Little City in the World. It’s like a Las Vegas “light”. 

  • 7. Cape Canaveral, Florida

    There’s so much here. The Kennedy Space Center. Manatee Sanctuary Park. Air Force Space & Missile Museum. And of course, a great place to watch rocket launches. 

  • 8. Holmes Beach, Florida

    Holmes Beach is a city on Anna Maria Island in Manatee County. Lots of bars, restaurants, and coffee shops, and of course – the beaches of Anna Maria Island. 

  • 9. Rutherford, California

    Rutherford is the proud owner of Napa County’s best scenic meadows and fields. It is pretty popular for its cabernet grapes and hence its wine. 

  • 10. Indio, California

    The Coachella Valley of Southern California’s Colorado Desert region. Indio is known as the “City of Festivals.”

    The data cited was gathered and analyzed from three key sources:

    1. A Tripadvisor Consumer Sentiment Survey, based on data drawn from an online survey of over 2,400 consumers, in partnership with Qualtrics, conducted between June 20 – July 1, 2023 across six countries, including AustraliaItalyJapanSingapore, U.K. & U.S.
    2. Site behavioral data sourced from first party traffic data on the Tripadvisor platform, gathered between June 1 – July 8, 2023, for searches made by travelers in the U.S., U.K., AustraliaJapan, and Singapore for travel between September 1 – November 30, 2023.
