Chris Hemsworth: Playing A Superhero Is a ‘Predictable Box’
Chris Hemsworth seems to be more than happy with moving on to other roles that aren’t Marvel-related. The Furiosa star told Entertainment Weekly in a joint interview with Anya Taylor-Joy that after playing a superhero in four standalone movies and several Avengers films as Thor, the departure “was nice.”
While talking to the publication on Wednesday (May 1), Hemsworth, 40, compared the red capes he wore while playing Thor and most recently as Dementus in the Mad Max prequel. Commenting on his villainous role as the sociopathic warlord, the Australian actor said it wasn’t intentional to wear a red cape like his Marvel character. He also admitted that taking on such a bombastic character “scared the s— out of me.”
Playing A Superhero Is Too Predictable
However, he found the parallels while transforming and inhabiting a completely different physicality from Thor was a “wonderful departure” and “a lot of fun. I loved it. And it was the real attraction.” The actor added that another selling point for Furiosa was the desire “to dirty it up and to be messy and ugly and violent and chaotic, rather than being in the somewhat predictable box of the hero in a superhero space. There’s a whole lot of rules that you have to stick to. With this, I could throw that out the window, which was nice.”
Taylor-Joy, who plays the film’s title character, asked her co-star during their EW feature: “After years of capes, are they annoying?” To which Hemsworth immediately replied, “Hate ’em. So impractical.”
Furiosa comes to theaters on May 24th. Watch the epic trailer below:
While promoting the film, Hemsworth had fun reading fans’ reactions to his role in Furiosa. One person hilariously noted, “Forgot Chris Hemsworth was in Furiosa and I thought ‘damn this ugly a– dude looks like Chris Hemsworth.'” Director George Miller wanted Dementus “to be this historic-looking Roman figure” and used prosthetics for his nose. Another fan noted that Miller probably thought Hemsworth was “too pretty for the wasteland,” thus the use of prosthetics.
Commenting on how Hemsworth looks as Dementus, a second fan said, “I am all in for Chris Hemsworth’s ‘ugly character actor’ era #Furiosa.” Hilariously, Hemsworth said, “I didn’t think he was ugly, I thought he was quite lovely.” One person bluntly states, “You’re ugly as f— in it and ya still HOT [flame emojis].” Another fan noted, “holy s— i just realized chris hemsworth will be allowed to be australian furiousa.”
