On Monday (July 1), Halsey, 29, posted a clip on social media wearing a white Lucky shirt, micro shorts, and hot pink hair as she poses for "paparazzi." Halsey's new track, titled "Lucky," features the pop singer using Britney's OG lines, "But I'm so lucky, I'm a star, but I cry, cry, cry, and the lonely heart thinking, 'If there's nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come at night?'"
In her caption, the Grammy-nominated artist writes: "When I was 5, it always felt like Britney was singing directly to me. 24 years later, these words hit different. love you forever [star emoji]."
Halsey has posted more clips on YouTube and TikTok of her Y2K persona. In one clip, she's asked by paparazzi, "Hey, why'd your boyfriend break up with you? What'd you do to piss him off?" Responding, "You want to see?" another part of the upcoming track shows an acoustic verse of the track.
Wearing a very Ashely Tisdale-inspired outfit from the early 2000s, Halsey acts as if she is drawing the Disney Channel's iconic Mickey Mouse ears with a wand and lists social media platforms. In another fake advertisement for Got Milk? Halsey spits out pink-colored milk and spits it out, bursting out in profanities of the milk's taste.
Hanging out poolside with an ankle monitor, a paparazzi asks her, "Halsey, what's it like being on house arrest? Show us the ankle bracelet!" She walks toward the pap, says, "Get a real job!" and throws her drink at them.
Fans have been loving Halsey's teasers, and saying so in her Instagram comments. One person said, "this is all I could think about as soon as you posted Lucky [sobbing emoji] a true millennial dream." Added another, "Amazing, Britney will forever be the Icon of our generation." A third said, "how she feels about britney is the same feeling i have towards her. that’s healing [teary eyed emoji]."
Many fans want Britney to be featured on the track or remix version, but the "Princess of Pop" and Halsey have both yet not confirmed if that is going to happen.
As we previously reported, Halsey released the first single, "The End," from her upcoming fifth album. She wrote in early June: "Long story short, I’m Lucky to be alive. Short story long, I wrote an album. It begins with The End. out now."
“The End” features heart-breaking lyrics, “Every couple of years now, a doctor says I’m sick. Pulls out a brand new bag of tricks, and then they lay it on me.” Listing what she went through in the last few years, Halsey says it started with her brain (bipolar disorder), “then a skeleton in pain” (leukemia).
Spears’ “Lucky” was released on July 25, 2000, as the second single from her second studio album, Oops!… I Did It Again. “Lucky” is about an eponymous famous actress who seemingly has it all but feels unhappy and lonely.
