Fort Myers Filmmaker’s Boxing Documentary Set for New York Premiere

Worth the Fight, showing how Fort Myers' SJC Boxing Club helps troubled youth, debuts in New York in April 2025.

“I've been the founder and the president of SJC Boxing Club for many, many years,” Steven Canton told Gulf Coast News. “Mainly, the film itself portrays and follows various kids that came into my gym with severe problems.”

Director John Biffar followed young boxers as they battled personal challenges. His film shines among the growing number of movies coming from Florida's Gulf Coast, far from Hollywood's spotlight.

Money matters in filmmaking, and Florida isn't flush with it. While Georgia pulls in big movies with tax breaks, Florida's filmmakers get by with community support and local funding.

This film arrives as the Fort Myers Film Festival turns 15. What began as a small event has become an important hub for area talent.

With Eric Raddatz leading the way, the festival connects local artists with worldwide storytellers. Each year opens new doors for creators to meet and showcase their work.
