The man behind SpongeBob SquarePants has died, Stephen Hillenburg passed away of ALS on Tuesday, he was diagnosed with the disease in March.
Nickelodeon released a statement about Hillenburg’s passing, calling him a “beloved friend” and sending condolences to his family. In the statement, the network went on to say that, "Steve imbued SpongeBob SquarePants with a unique sense of humor and innocence that has brought joy to generations of kids and families everywhere.” Hillenburg was 57.
