This Is Why It’s So Important To Teach Kids The Real Names Of Their Body Parts
Sandy K. Wurtele, a psychology professor at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs, says that it’s important to teach children the real names of their body parts.
Wurtele tells the New York Times, “Without proper terminology, children have a very hard time telling someone about inappropriate touching, If a child says someone touched her cookie, it would be very difficult for a listener to know.” She goes on to say that sexual predators seeking victims are less likely to attack children that are confident and are informed. So teaching children the appropriate terms gives them more self-esteem. By choosing cute names for a child’s private parts you sending a message that they should be ashamed of their body and although you want to teach them not yell “penis” in the middle of the grocery store, you to want them to know that it’s okay to talk about their bodies in the proper setting with the people they can trust.
What names did you give your children for their private parts? Do you agree with this theory?
