But it turns out, they’re not interchangeable. Button-down shirts were invented in the late-1800s by British polo players, who added buttons to their collars to keep them from flapping around. Speaking on the Today show, Megan Collins of Style Girlfriend gives you an easy trick: all shirts are technically button-up. But if there are buttons on the collar, it’s a button down.
