FCC Warns of Sierra Leone ‘One Ring’ Robocallers: Don’t Call Back
There is nothing scarier than a call in the middle of the night.
You always assume the worst, right? Well that is what the latest in robocall scammers is hoping. That you will be so alarmed that you will call the number back and then they GOTCHA! It’s called the “One Ring”or the “Wangiri” scam. The robocallers target specific area codes in bursts and often calls multiple times in the middle of the night. They hang up after one or two rings. The goal is to get you so freaked out that you call the number back which results in a toll being paid to the scammer. The calls come from a 222 or 223 country code which belongs to the West African countries of Mauritania and Sierra Leone. To be safe, if you do not make international calls ask your phone company to block outgoing international calls on your line.
