An historic solar eclipse happens this weekend. Many people are packing their bags, traveling out of Southwest Florida and into a more direct path to experience total darkness. Meteorologist and scientists say most Floridians will only see about a 60% blockage Saturday. The solar eclipse in Southwest Florida is not the only thing going on. People in 15 states will see the moon completely cover the sun while creating a ring of fire. The next total eclipse is 20 years from now and only falls in three western states according to scientists. The size of this one is a big deal. In Southwest Florida it begins around 1:45.
Do not look directly at the eclipse without pinhole glasses or something similar. It can damage your vision. If you have not purchased special viewing glass, here are some DIY versions. In addition, you need to use a filter if you are viewing through a telescope or binoculars.
