DNA Technology Helps LCSO Solve Stabbing Case in 90 Minutes
Thanks to the latest cutting-edge DNA technology from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, a stabbing case that could’ve dragged on for months was wrapped up in just 90 minutes. According to a LCSO Facebook post, back on December 17, 2024, deputies responded to a call near Morse Shores Plaza, where a man, bleeding from his neck, claimed he had been attacked while asleep. He told deputies the assailant wore a grey hoodie and walked away after the assault. The victim was quickly rushed to the hospital.
While searching the area, deputies found a suspect matching the description: Abraham Reyes, wearing the same grey hoodie. When they detained him for questioning, they found a weapon nearby and blood stains on his sweatshirt. This was enough for the Violent Crimes Unit to take over the investigation.
Rapid DNA:
Reyes initially denied involvement, but his story didn’t line up with surveillance footage. Meanwhile, the Forensics Unit worked quickly using the Rapid DNA ANDE machine, which sped up DNA testing from months to just an hour and a half. This machine is one of the few in the country, and it came in clutch when the blood on Reyes’ hoodie tested positive for the victim’s.
With the DNA evidence allegedly linking Reyes to the crime, along with the video footage, detectives were able to secure a probable cause for his arrest. He was charged with Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon.
Thanks to the quick thinking of the deputies and the fast-acting technology, the case went from a baffling mystery to a solid arrest in record time. Law enforcement teams at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office proved once again that their teamwork and advanced tools can make a real difference when it comes to putting dangerous offenders behind bars.
