Cape Coral Iguana Infestation: FWC on the Case, Residents Hope for Relief
Susan Rizzo, a Cape Coral resident, is waging war against an iguana army that has turned her backyard into a Jurassic Park. Minus the blockbuster budget, of course.
According to NBC2, to combat this scaly situation, Susan has offered a cool $100 to anyone who can rescue her from this iguana insurgency. But wait, there’s a catch… It’s a $50 minimum, and that’s the cheapest per iguana! Seems like even the iguana removal business knows how to capitalize on chaos.
Susan has tried everything to protect her turf. First, she attempted to fortify her fence with wires, but the crafty iguanas found their way in. Next, she built a fortress like fence, but these lizards just laughed and scurried through. Finally, Susan resorted to rocks as her last line of defense. The iguanas must’ve thought it was a buffet line because they still found their way in.
Iguana Army:
And these iguanas are no mere trespassers. They waltz in, knock stuff over, play vegetable roulette, and leave a calling card in the form of droppings. Susan’s backyard has become a reptilian amusement park, complete with gastrointestinal adventures for her poor dogs, who’ve had to take unexpected trips to the vet thanks to their unfortunate dietary choices.
But fear not, the City of Cape Coral and the FWC (Florida Wildlife Commission) are on the case. Well, sort of. The city has a Nile monitor trapping program, and the FWC is looking to get some help for Susan. Let’s hope they don’t send in a SWAT team of biologists with butterfly nets.
In the meantime, remember, iguanas are not native to Florida, so you can humanely kick them out of your backyard year-round, no permit required. Just remember to be kind. Even iguanas need a new home sometimes.
The Giant African Snail And 12 Other Animals That Are Trying To Destroy Florida
The Giant African Snail has been in the news lately as thousands of these things have invaded the New Port Richey area. According to FDACS, “The giant African land snail (GALS) is one of the most damaging snails in the world and consumes at least 500 different types of plants. These snails could be devastating to Florida agriculture and natural areas as they cause extensive damage to tropical and subtropical environments. The snails also pose a serious health risk to humans by carrying the parasite rat lungworm, known to cause meningitis in humans.”

So it’s not just plants, these things will eat the stucco right off your house. And grabbing one with your hands is a band idea, as they can cause meningitis. They’re so badly trying to control these things that they’ve set up a quarantine area around New Port Richey where “It is unlawful to move the giant African land snail or a regulated article, including but not limited to, plants, plants parts, plants in soil, soil, yard waste, debris, compost or building materials, within, through or from a quarantine area without a compliance agreement.” If you’re not familiar, New Port Richey is along the coast just north of the Clearwater/Tampa area. These things have not been reported in our area and it’d be nice to keep it that way. Stucco eating snails? I just paid 3 grand to have my house painted, no thanks.
The Giant African Snail isn’t the only animal trying to destroy Florida. Ranker took a look at some of the animals that hate us living in this tropical paradise, and they want us out.
