Southwest Florida Island Named Most Charming Small Town In Florida
We have so many great areas in Southwest Florida, but one island has been named the most charming small town in Florida.
Living in Florida is a dream come true for me. My family had a home in Clearwater Beach when I was growing up that was always our escape. I always envisioned myself living here full-time, but it wasn’t until I was 33 years old that I made it a reality. I first landed in Sarasota, and have now been in Fort Myers for almost 5 years. Absolutely the best move I ever made. This area has so much to offer. When I feel the need for a vacation, even for just a day, I make the very short drive over the Sanibel Causeway out to the island. Instantly it feels like I’ve been transported somewhere else.

I feel like Sanibel is the island everyone talks about, but not a lot of people actually go out there. I was telling a friend that I was going out for a beach day and she told me she hasn’t been out to Sanibel in years. Maybe it’s the $6 toll that keeps people away. Maybe it’s that there’s another beach closer. But I love it out there. And it seems I’m not the only one as Reader’s Digest has just named the island the most charming small town in Florida.
Now, the island definitely looks different post-Hurricane Ian. It breaks my heart when I drive out there to still see so much damage and destruction. I will say though, it’s come a long way. The beaches are all so gorgeous and a lot of restaurants have reopened, so there’s plenty to enjoy. The publication says of Sanibel that it’s known for “fabulous seashell finds” and wildlife sightings. I highly recommend going through Ding Darling for the latter. Other things recommended by Reader’s Digest was a visit to the Sanibel Historical Museum and to stay at the Island Inn.
