Cane Toad Poisoning Kits Are Now For Sale In Southwest Florida
There is nothing I love more than my dog Rocket so to say I’m scared to death of cane toads is an understatement, but cane toad poisoning kits are now for sale in Southwest Florida.
It wasn’t until I moved to Fort Myers that I started hearing about cane toads. Everyone told me to keep an eye out and that if my dog was curious, to really watch him at night or the in the early mornings to make sure he stays away from them. Now that they’re on my radar, I see them almost daily, and it doesn’t help that I live on a lake so there are probably even more in my neighborhood. In fact, FWC estimates that there could be hundreds of thousands of cane toads here in Southwest Florida.
If you’re not familiar with them, these toads are huge and make themselves even more known during this time of year when it’s rainy and humid. Why they’re dangerous is because they excrete a toxin called bufotoxin when they’re squeezed or bit that can be fatal to pets. Our friend Seth from SlethReptiles Animal and Wildlife Removal has said that if the toxin is ingested by a dog, you only have minutes to remove it and depending on the size of the dog, they could be dead shortly after. While there are companies that remove them, I see them in my neighborhood frequently, it’s best to be prepared and now cane toad poisoning kits are available.
