‘Mulan’ To Premiere On Disney+
A number of films that would have been in movie theaters by now have, instead, debuted on streaming platforms, as major studios try to navigate the new media landscape during (and after) the coronavirus.
But the studios have held on to some of their releases, waiting for theaters to safely open again: the next James Bond movie, No Time To Die, the next Marvel Cinematic Universe feature Black Widow and DC’s Wonder Woman 1984 are some of the tentpole films that still haven’t premiered to the public. But Disney has just announced that one of the big-budget holdouts will be available to viewers in their home if they are Disney+ subscribers.
Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced that the live-action Mulan will premiere on Disney+ on a “premiere access” basis on September 4 for $29.99, according to Variety. They report that the film will be released theatrically in markets in which access to the movie on Disney Plus is not available.
Chapek said, “We’re looking at Mulan as a one-off, as opposed to saying there’s some new business windowing model that we’re looking at. We find it very interesting to take a premiere offering to consumers at that $29.99 price and learn from it,” noting that Disney would study the number of transactions and the number of subscribers generated by the movie.
