Simu Liu Slams Disney CEO Who Dubbed ‘Shang-Chi’ An ‘Experiment’
Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings was called an “interesting experiment” by Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek on a recent earnings call with investors. He was referring to the fact that the film will be in theaters for just 45 days before being available on Disney+.
According to AV Club, the Disney CEO feels that this is just another way to test how consumers want to consume movies, since people who want to see the movie ASAP must pay to do so in a theater, but people who don’t want to do that only have to wait a few weeks to see it on Disney+. This is in contrast to Black Widow and Disney’s Jungle Cruise, both of which were available on Disney+ (for an extra cost) as soon as they were in theaters.
But Shang-Chi is Marvel Studios’ first movie led by Asian actors, and the film’s star, Simu Liu, took offense at the term. Liu publicly addressed Chapek’s statement with a post on Instagram writing, “We are not an ‘interesting experiment.’ We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise. I’m fired the f— up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US.”

Simu Liu is best known for his performance as Jung Kim in the award-winning sitcom Kim’s Convenience. Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings centers around Shang-Chi, a master of numerous martial arts unarmed and weaponry-based wushu styles, including the use of the gun, nunchaku, and jian. Awkwafina joins the cast as Shang-Chi’s friend, Katy.
The upcoming film also takes some inspiration from the more recent Shang-Chi series of comics, which sees the martial arts master trying to enjoy life in San Francisco away from mystical and family drama, only for his old life to come crashing back.
