Fort Myers Plans Ban on Heavy Trucks Along McGregor Boulevard
Fort Myers leaders are moving to stop big trucks from using McGregor Boulevard as a shortcut. The new rules would force semis and dump trucks to stay on SR-82 and US-41, the city’s designated truck routes.
“The ordinance would not affect deliveries like Amazon but would restrict heavy dump trucks and semis,” said Councilman Liston Bochette to Fox 4 News.
Chief Jason Fields noticed trucks were avoiding main roads. His officers will monitor both directions, looking for trucks trying to bypass the rules.
This change is part of a bigger effort to make roads safer. Fort Myers sits uncomfortably high – in the top 40% of Florida’s most dangerous cities – with speeding and aggressive driving leading the problems.
Last year’s numbers tell a troubling story: 109 DUI crashes. The danger zones? Cleveland Avenue, Colonial Boulevard, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Armed with new funding, police have stepped up patrols in crash-prone areas. They’re targeting speeders and drunk drivers.
A rise in canal accidents has raised new worries. More cars are ending up in canals since 2021. The aging bridges and deteriorating canal roads need urgent attention.
Delivery trucks can still make stops on McGregor. But the heavy trucks? They’ll have to use main roads when passing through.
The new rules could kick in next week. Police will start by giving warnings instead of tickets to help drivers get used to the change.
This matches the city’s overall traffic strategy. Current rules already keep trucks off certain side streets and stop U-turns in heavily congested areas.
